Theo S. Painter Jr., MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI

Dr. Theophilus S. “Theo” Painter, Jr., MD is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin where his father, a notable zoologist, served as president from 1944 to 1952. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Following medical school and a brief time in private practice, Dr. Painter served his country as a USAF Medical Corp Captain during the Korean War. The war brought many opportunities to treat airmen for allergies, and after the war he entered the University of Michigan to formally train in Allergy and Immunology. Returning to Austin in 1958, he opened his private practice as an allergist, a practice now known as Allergy & Asthma Consultants. He is also notable as a co-founder of the Texas Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society, and has remained active with Texas Medical Association and the Travis County Medical Society throughout his time in practice. He continues to work tirelessly to help his patients stay symptom free. Dr. Painter is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Allergy & Immunology.

Edward Peters, MD, FAAAAI

After graduating from Catholic University of America he attended the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston for medical school. He went on to complete residency training in internal medicine, as well as a fellowship at M.D. Anderson in Pulmonology and Critical Care medicine. He then completed an additional fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at The University of Virginia. He continues to work on problems related to chronic sinus disease, lung disease, and asthma. He has been selected as Super Doctor in Texas Monthly for the past several years. Dr. Peters is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Allergy & Immunology. He has continued to follow his passion for education of physicians and patients, and manages several other informative websites including AustinAsthma and TexasFluBusters.

Maria Gutierrez, MD, FAAAAI

Dr. Gutierrez is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Pharmacy, and completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston (UTMB). She stayed at UTMB to complete her residency training in Internal Medicine, and then went on to complete an Allergy and Immunology fellowship at National Jewish Medical and Research Center, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver, Colorado. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Allergy & Immunology. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.




Paul Vigo, MD, FACAAI

Prior to joining the practice in 2005, Dr. Vigo had previously trained at Washington University Hospital in St. Louis and worked at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Ohio. He has a special interest in nasal allergies as they relate to asthma and chronic sinus disease. He also prescribes allergy drops as therapy for appropriate patients. He is a regional speaker on topics that involve allergies and asthma and is on his fourth term as the President of the Austin Allergy Society. In addition, he sits on the Board of Directors for Texas Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society.  He has passed board certifications for both Internal Medicine and Allergy.  He is fluent in both English and Spanish.  He is also a “former” allergic and asthmatic person.

Alexander Alvarez, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI

An Austin native, Dr. Alvarez holds a bachelor's degree from Rice University and a medical degree from The University of Texas Southwestern at Dallas. He went on to complete both a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA prior to joining the practice. Dr. Alvarez is board certified in Pediatric and Adult Allergy & Immunology as well as in Internal Medicine. He is affiliated with Seton Medical Center where he holds staff privileges. He is very active in advocating for patients and the practice of medicine in Texas through both the Travis County Medical Society and the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Alvarez has also been nominated by his peers to the Texas Monthly Super Doctors “Rising Stars” list in 2019. He is interested in a variety of allergic diseases including seasonal allergies, asthma, immunotherapy (allergy shots and allergy drops), sinus disease, skin rashes, eosinophilic disorders, and urticaria (hives), and he enjoys treating both children and adults!
